Vox Theatre Strives for Sustainability

Happy Earth Day! The annual event is celebrated around the world on April 22 to show unified support for environmental protection. Earth Day 2020 marks the 70th year of global demonstrations to enforce change in governmental and civic policies.

Businesses large and small can take part in environmental protection and conservation: In Kansas City, curbside and business recycling helps divert roughly 45% of waste has from landfills.

At the Vox Theatre Event Space, we take advantage of local programming business partnerships to curb our waste from both general operations and events. We go further and.purposefully build sustainable practices into our operations, as well as offer these opportunities to our guests.

1. We Recycle - our team participates in the city's single-stream recycling program, as well as glass recycling pickup from Glass Bandit. This service is extended to our event guests, and we monitor trash & recycling throughout the event duration.

2. We Clean, Cleanly - our venue cleaning supplies are all Green Seal certified products; these products reduce both environmental risks and health risks to our guests.

3. We Garden - we're in the midst of creating our own compost system, and use gardening practices in our private outdoor patio to help conserve water and keep the soil healthy.

4. We Partner - when we are limited in expertise or lack resources, we partner with local companies to bring eco-friendly practices into the event space. For example, we now offer food scrap disposal and pickup courtesy of Compost Collective KC.

We look forward to increasing our environmentally-conscious practices for our wedding, corporate, and private event partners. If environmental steward ship is important in your life, then make sure you vote with your dollar. Host your next event at the Vox Theatre Event Space, and we'll make sure nothing goes to waste.

A (Short) History of the Vox Theatre

Rosedale Theatre - 1922
Vox Theatre - 1944
Before it was the Vox Theatre Event Space, it was a 1940s talkie theater; and before the theatre amused audiences with full sound, it was a silent film theatre entertaining the growing population of the Rosedale neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas.

In December 1922, Mr. T.L. Ricksecker spearheaded the construction of the brick building for $30,000 - about $461,000 in today's money.

Fast forward to August 1940, when the theatre debuted as a "talkie", and renamed the Vox Theatre.  The owners touted a "newly remodeled" space, "new sound", "new upholstered seats"-- and Spencer Tracy flicks.

In the early 1960s, small intimate theaters gave way to large drive-in theaters and the space was sold to Westport Heating and Cooling; the company used the space to manufacture sheet metal ductwork. The floor was filled in making one large, leveled room. .

Eventually, the space transitioned into an antique car garage, and fitted with a garage door in the front of the space.

In 2009, an architectural photographer purchased the space and completed full renovations to transform it into a photography studio, and eventually an event space.

Today, the Vox Theatre Event Space is owned and operated by an all female team, and hosts thousands of people through its doors each year.
The space is used for a variety of events, including live music shows, comedy stand up sets, large fundraisers, weddings, graduation parties, and small weekly company meetings. Nearing its 100th year in existence, the Vox Theatre Event Space will remain a staple of the Rosedale neighborhood for years to come.

Planning a wedding is a hefty task, no matter where the date falls on the calendar. Doing so in the midst of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) will definitely come with challenges.

The Vox Theatre Event Space has taken a proactive approach to working with our wedding couples to bring solutions to the planning table. Vox couples impacted by official guidelines from the CDC are able to seek alternative dates on the Vox's 2020 events calendar, and into 2021 if necessary. We are also ready to support couples as they coordinate with their other vendors about their date change.

Professionals in the industry, including wedding planners and travel consultants, all agree that couples need to remain aware of their local conditions, follow the news, and maintain an open conversation with their vendors and guests.

For Kansas City couples, the stay-at-home order is due to expire on April 24th, however this may not mean larger gatherings will be encouraged or even allowed immediately following that date. The Vox recommends that all our May, June & July couples have honest conversations with their family and immediate friends about the effects of COVID-19 on their lives and their ability to remain safe and healthy getting to and throughout their wedding day. For now, the CDC recommends all weddings be postponed until Mid-May. The Vox Theatre Event Space will continue to follow the guidelines set out by local and federal entities, and will work with couples to create the best solution to their individual situations.

Vox Hosts the KC Thursday Therapy Networking Group

This past August, the Vox Theatre Event Space hosted the Kansas City Thursday Therapy networking group for its monthly wedding industry meet-up. Thursday Therapy began loosely in 2007, and has grown into national networking group with designated hosts all around the country.
Each third Thursday of each month, the Thursday Therapy Kansas City group meets at a local event space, which showcases products and services from vendors all around the Kansas City area. The Vox Theatre team and participating vendors created their own “French Quarter” right here in Kansas City, with all the trappings of old time New Orleans. Guests dined on New Orleans staples from Geaux Catering, sipped on a superb Hurricane from Erin Cook Bartending (also a Vox Theatre preferred vendor!) and were spellbound by the intimate lighting from Innovative Lighting and Design. Below is a full list of all the vendors that participated in the August 2019 Thursday Therapy:
