![]() I get this question all of the time, "What is a C.O.I. and why do I have to pay for that?" C.O.I. simply stands for certificate of insurance of event liability insurance and is a proof of purchase of that policy. What exactly is event liability insurance? Event insurance is designed to help protect an insured’s investment in certain occasions. It is a type of liability coverage that applies to claims made by third parties for bodily injury or property damage that can occur during an event. Imagine the financial burden you can put on yourself without insurance if things do not go as planned. Unfortunately, with the way of the world we have to factor in the elements that go beyond our control. During an event anything and everything could go wrong so it is important to be protected. The last thing you want is to be unprepared. The following losses are insured with event liability insurance: bodily injury, property damage, medical payment, personal and advertising injury, lawsuits, and cancellation and postponement. One thing to keep in mind is that this insurance does not cover COVID-19 situations. But let’s say dear Aunt Sally brought in her famous potato salad to the party. Now, we all know how much time and care that Aunt Sally always puts into her food. However the environment in which the dish was prepared might not have been sterilized properly. Or maybe it was the heat from the car ride over to the venue. Perhaps even, those eggs really were spoiled and not just a funny color…Whatever the cause, the result is anyone that enjoyed that potato salad becomes violently ill. Now, if you had purchased your C.O.I. for the day, you’re not having to worry about much past the porcelain rim. Yet, in the scenario that you decided to chance it and not get the insurance, well now those sick guests can come back and sue the party host. All to say, you’re better off paying a little now for event insurance than facing future legal fees and headaches that could last well past your event date. ![]() One thing to note is that typically your chosen Kansas City caterer is going to have this insurance and you're not going to have to purchase this coverage. This is only required if you are choosing to have family members do the catering. The other instance it is required is if you are not using a license/insured bartender. Again, generally vendors will have this but if not you are able to buy insurance for them to be certified for the day. One C.O.I. will cover both the food and the drinks, just be sure to make a note of that when filling out the "coverage options". When applying for insurance you will need to provide the following information: Event Location Number of Attendees Length of Coverage Type of Event All Event Dates Coverage Options When all is said and done, it is good to have peace of mind going into your event. After all of the hard work and planning that goes into any celebration, it's only right to expect the best outcomes and not worry about all of the things that could go wrong during your event. Above all we want you to enjoy your event, be present, and create many lasting fond memories. No one wants to be stuck with a financial burden from an unexpected personal injury or property damage during your event.
This is why we require a C.O.I. for all of our Vox events.
